Client Needs
The homeowners were entering retirement and wanted the freedom to travel without worrying about constant lawn care, watering, mowing and seasonal garden maintenance. At the same time, they did not want their front yard to feel empty, hard or overly simplified. Their goal was a beautiful, welcoming garden that could remain visually strong with minimal ongoing work.
Garden Conditions & Challenges
Removing the lawn would significantly reduce maintenance, but replacing it entirely with gravel could easily make the landscape feel flat or sterile. The challenge was to create a garden with movement, softness, and seasonal interest while dramatically reducing maintenance.
Our Solution
We retained the strongest existing mature plants and redesigned the ground plane around them. Flowing bands of contrasting decorative stone create movement through the garden, while circular planting islands and carefully positioned low-maintenance plants soften the hardscape. The existing concrete walkway became part of the composition rather than something the new landscape had to work around.
