A Backyard Transformation That Touched Our Hearts

When I arrived in Surrey for a consultancy meeting, I encountered a modest and somewhat neglected garden—and an exceptionally kind couple. From the moment they told me they preferred natural Canadian wood over synthetic composite decking for their patio, they unknowingly touched my heart. I usually dread working with composite decks, and their decision made me feel connected to them instantly.

Even before leaving their garden, I had already envisioned their new outdoor space. Their sloped yard made the already small space feel even more limited. With just a few design touches—leveling the yard and adding a few layers of treated wood profiles—we could transform it into a serene, usable space.

They loved the proposal. But there was a hurdle: their strata had denied approval, citing municipal restrictions. I knew that projects under 1 foot of elevation didn't require city permits, and it became clear the issue lay elsewhere. I gently suggested that if they worked with a contractor already approved by the strata, they might find a quicker resolution. I feared their dream would remain unrealized.

Mike didn’t accept that. He engaged in long discussions with the strata and eventually sent me the approval letter himself. The responsibility of bringing their dream to life was now ours.

They had no idea the project would be completed ahead of schedule. The day we finished, both Mike and Sarah were out. When Mike returned home and saw the completed garden, I wish I had a camera to capture the joy on his face.

That happiness—that moment—is what binds us to our work and erases all our fatigue.

Later, Mike told us he wanted to invite our entire team for dinner. Even if we never make it to that meal, his kind gesture means more than the best meal or the biggest paycheck.

Two quiet days passed, and then we received an email that reminded us why we do what we do:

---

Good afternoon, Ebru,

Last night, Sarah and I were left absolutely speechless!!! We both found ourselves standing in the backyard, basking in its beauty!

We also admitted to ourselves how filthy the fence is—this is cleaning weekend… The living wall is incredible, and we are so happy to be part of your project, and enjoy the benefits of our own vertical garden!!!

Please let me know when you are available to discuss where we should install our lighting, using and caring for the Living Wall, ongoing maintenance, and settling the final invoice.

Our sincerest Thank You to you, Volkan, and the rest of the team. We would like to invite everybody back for dinner once we have the finishing touches on the yard later!

That one email made every effort, every challenge, and every long day worth it!
